Sad news if you like the classic candies, Necco wafers and Sweethearts! The Massachusetts plant that made these delicious treats closed on Tuesday. Round Hill Investments announced that it had sold Necco, purchased for $17.3 million in May, to another candy maker. According to this story from USA Today, Necco was the oldest continuously operating candy company in the United States.
According to company lore, the Civil War soldiers from the North and U.S. troops during World War II ate the chalky-yet-sweet Necco Wafers. The iconic sugary snack also made its way to the Arctic and Antarctica via early explorers who trekked across frozen tundra. It was also a mainstay at theaters where moviegoers trekked across the sticky aisles to the snack bar.
The internet is buzzing over Necco’s closure!
Why yes, I did just buy 2 cases of Necco Wafers out of fear that they were being discontinued.
Am I worried that they'll go stale?
Of course I am not.
Because I am well aware that there is no difference between fresh Necco Wafers and stale Necco Wafers.— RaPUNzel (@RandilynIsIn) July 30, 2018

Just bought 16 rolls of NECCO wafers. Gonna savor them like Charlie with his chocolate bar.
