Maybe one of the reasons kids aren’t as independent these days is because parents feel they must keep a closer eye on them. Times have changed, especially when it comes to just how comfortable we are allowing our 10-year-old children to be unsupervised.
1000 parents were asked about how their parents raised them, versus how they are raising their own children… here are some of the highlights:
As a 10-year-old did you stay home alone for an hour or two? Over half said yes, but only 36% say they allow it with their own children.
68% walked or biked to school, but only 43% let their kids do it now.
Over 90% of them played in their own yard, but 78% of kids do now.
51% played in the park alone as kids, but only 26% let their kids play in the park without supervision.
Fewer than 25% allow their kids to trick or treat alone, when nearly half, 44% were allowed to as kids.
As kids 60% enjoyed playing outside, while only 10% of kids today prefer to play outside these days, the overall favorite activity, not surprisingly, is playing video games.
