Lafayette officials are considering whether to adopt a local law or wait for the state legislature to pass a law regulating the use of pay-by-the-minute scooter rentals.

Bird and Lime scooters began showing up in Lafayette in late November and early December. Patrons use a smartphone app to sign up to use the scooters, pay only for the minutes they use the scooter and can leave the scooter anywhere when done. The companies use GPS to find the scooters.

At Tuesday’s city-parish council meeting, Mayor-President Joel Robideaux said he and city attorneys discussed the matter with state officials, learning a proposed law is expected to be introduced to the state legislature during the upcoming session in March.

Councilman Bruce Conque indicated he was prepared to offer a local ordinance regulating the scooters. Robideaux said the city is looking at what other local governments do about the scooters before introducing a local law.

“I believe it’s going to be one of two solutions: We’re either going to have to wait for them to be allowed (by the state) or we’re going to present something locally that dictates how they are going to be used,” he said.

It will probably be late February, Robideaux said, before a local ordinance can be adopted.
