Daniel Cormier Nominated for an ESPY Award

Lafayette-native and UFC Heavyweight Champion, Daniel Cormier, has been nominated for Best MMA Fighter at this year’s ESPY Awards.

The Northside High School graduate had a dominant year in 2018 becoming a 2-division UFC champion.  As the Light-Heavyweight Champion, Cormier defended his belt and then moved up to the highest weight class.  Not only did he win on the next level, but he both became the UFC Heavyweight Champion with a devastating knockout and defended the title later that year.  Cormier is the only UFC 2-division champion to hold the titles in the heaviest divisions at the same time.  He later relinquished the Light-Heavyweight belt, so he could continue to defend in the Heavyweight division.


Acadiana sports fans would also be excited to know that Saints Quarterback, Drew Brees has also been nominated.  Brees is up for Best NFL Player and Best Record-Breaking Performance as he moved into first place for most completions in NFL history.

ESPN’s ESPY Awards will be Wednesday, July 10th on ABC.  You can vote for your favorites here:
