You may know it by the iconic spinning loaf or as your favorite bread.
This Acadiana original was opened as Huval Baking company by Joseph Huval in Youngsville, Louisiana August 19, 1919.
The location, name and ownership may have changed over time, but this bread has always remained a favorite of generations. The Evangeline Maid brand debuted in 1937 inspired by the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie.” The daughter of the bakery’s owner, Mary Helen Huval at 19 served as the model.

“The fact that this community has supported a local bakery for 100 years is a testament to the loyalty of Acadians and their love of fresh bread,” said Flowers Baking Company General Manager Farley Painter. “This entire region is closely connected to the Evangeline Maid brand, and we have a responsibility to stay true to the quality tradition started by Mr. Huval 100 years ago.”
In the fall, the bakery will honor its centennial by unveiling a special Evangeline Maid mural on the bakery’s exterior. More details will be announced when a date is set for the unveiling. Facebook. Instagram (@evangelinemaid1919).
