Louisiana Sugar Farmers Could Set Record

Farmers are optimistic this year, saying it could be another record-breaking year for the state’s sugar cane industry. Louisiana sugar cane is arguably the most successful crop in the state’s history. The sugar industry is vital to the state’s economy.

Generating an overall economic value of $3 billion a year, sugarcane is produced on over 400,000 acres across 22 parishes, which amounts to almost 13 million tons of cane a year. Harvest is expected to come to an end in January.

Louisiana produces more than 1.5 million tons of raw sugar. All the raw sugar produced by Louisiana’s 11 sugar mills would fill up half of the Louisiana Superdome.
