In St. Landry parish two schools are now being closed for the 2019/2020 school year.
After much discussion and debate, the St. Landry Parish School board voted to close Southwest Elementary and North Elementary. The board also voted to make south elementary 5th-6th grades.
The board says they plan to re-draw school zones and some parents are concerned this will affect the school their child currently attends. But educators say in the long run, each school will become an entirely new school.
St. Landry Parish educator Tressha Willis says the changes are to benefit the kids.
“Ultimately the building will still be the same. There will be a new administration. There will be new staff, and teachers, and different kids that will come to the schools from around the parish. We won’t know until the new school year starts. As a parent and as an educator the real reason is for the kids, and it’s time that we move forward.”
Grolee, Park Vista, and Northeast Elementary will all be Pre-k through 4th grade.
These changes will take place next school year.
