Do You Remember The Story of Lake Peigneur

This November will mark 37 years that Lake Peigneur changed forever! On the morning of November 21, 1980, a Texaco oil rig crew on Lake Peigneur noticed that their drill had seized up below the surface of the shallow lake. The team wasn’t sure why. Following a series of loud pops, their platform began to tilt toward the water. The Texaco crew made it to shore and  had no idea that they managed to permanently turn a 10-foot-deep freshwater lake into a 200-foot-deep saltwater one. If you’ve attended a wedding or visited Rip Van Winkle Gardens, you can’t miss the chimney sticking out of the water!

Here’s a clip for a History Channel segment on Lake Peigneur
