Baseball fans in Acadiana, whether you pull for the Dodgers, Astros, even the most ardent Red Sox fans had to at least respect number 49 for the Yankees. Ron Guidry, Louisiana Lightning, was a hero for baseball fans of Acadiana in the ’70s and ’80s. Ron Guidry, at one point, could have run for office in Louisiana and won any office.
Today on MLB network because it is April 9th 4-9, they are broadcasting game 4 of the 1977 world series, game 3 of the 1978 world series against the Dodgers, and his 18 strikeout game against the Angels in 1978. The 18 strikeouts remain a Yankees record today.
Ron Guidry told reporters in 2018
“I’ve always been most happy when the guys that I played with tell stories about what it was like playing behind me. Someone once asked [outfielder] Mickey Rivers what it was like playing behind me. He said, ‘I don’t know why I ever bring my glove out there.'”
Grab a hot dog, a cold one, and enjoy Louisiana Lightning.
