The Books Along the Teche Literary Festival (March 31 – April 2, 2023) is proud to announce a ton of fun and educational panels for the 2023 festival.

Friday, March 31st

The History of Bunk Johnson

When: 8:30 – 9:15 a.m.

Where: Sliman Theater (129 E. Main St.)

Details: Learn about Bunk Johnson’s history and influence on not only Iberia Parish, but jazz music in Louisiana.

The Sounds of Iberia Parish

When: 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Where: Sliman Theater (129 E. Main St.)

Details: Dr. Barry Ancelet will explore how the old sounds of Iberia Parish continue to influence the contemporary Louisiana French music scene.

Jean Laffite Revealed

When: 10:30-11:15 a.m.

Where: Shadows-on-the-Teche Visitors Center (320 E. Main St.)

Details: Jean Laffite Revealed: Unraveling One of America’s Longest-Running Mysteries takes a fresh look at the various myths and legends surrounding one of the last great pirates.

The Historical & Theological Integrity of the Bible as a Literary Work

When: 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Where: Sliman Theater (129 E. Main St.)

Details: Fr. Mark Toups is assistant to the Diocesan Administrator, Coordinator for Parish Life and Development, and Pastor of Our Lady of the Isle Catholic Church in Grand Isle, LA. Fr. Toups has written several books on the Catholic faith and will discuss the Bible as a literary work.

How to Write & Pitch Magazines

When: 1:45 – 2:45 p.m.

Where: Shadows-on-the-Teche Visitors Center (320 E. Main St.)

Details: Join 64 Parishes magazine’s editorial staff and two regular contributors for a conversation on the nuts and bolts of writing for (and pitching to) magazines.

Fanning Your Creative Spark

When: 3 – 3:45 p.m.

Where: Shadows-on-the-Teche Visitors Center (320 E. Main St.)

Details: Award winning author, Mary Beth Magee, through actual hands on exercises, research and real-life examples will share her creative process.

Louisiana Poet Laureate Presentation

When: 3:45 – 4:30 p.m.

Where: Iberia Parish Library – Main Branch (445 E. Main St.)

Details: Dr. Mona Lisa Saloy, current Louisiana Poet Laureate, will be reading new works from her soon-to-be-released book Black Creole Chronicles scheduled for a Spring release date.

How to Write & Publish a Book

When: 4:45 – 5:30 p.m.

Where: Shadows-on-the-Teche Visitors Center (320 E. Main St.)

Details: Learn how to write and publish a book from author/publisher Chris Warner who has written over 20 books. His primary writing instructor was the late Bill Robbins, a coach for young journalists at the New York Times for 30 years.

Children’s Activities

When: Friday & Saturday

Details: The Books Along the Teche Literary Festival is packed full of fun and educational activities for children of all ages. There are kids cooking demonstration, storytimes, a children’s author’s fair, drawing/writing workshop and story walk and more. Visit the festival’s website for details and registration information.
