Acadian Culture Day
Sunday, August 15, from 10 a.m. – 6:45 p.m.
The community is invited to join the Bayou Vermilion District’s Vermilionville as they celebrate their annual Acadian Culture Day on Sunday, August 15th from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at their historic village. Every year Vermilionville hosts this free event for the public to explore how the Acadian community maintains its heritage.
This year’s Acadian Culture Day will focus on the theme “The Folklore of Family ” and the activities planned for the day will include a Tintamarre parade, canoeing, a sharing circle, film showings, cooking demonstrations, kids’ crafts and demonstrations such as trapping, accordion craft, the traiteur, spinning, and more. There will also be live music in the performance center by Balfa Toujours and the Pine Leaf Boys!
Each year for Acadian Culture Day Vermilionville presents a representative of the community with the Acadian Cultural Preservation Award in recognition of outstanding lifetime contributions to the preservation of the culture and the community. Stay tuned to find out who this year’s honoree will be. Previous recipients include Floyd Sonnier, Edward Cazayoux, Sheryl Cormier, and the “Mayor of Vermilionville,” Merlin Fontenot.
Acadian Culture Day is supported by an External Agencies Funding Program grant, sponsored by Lafayette Consolidated Government, and administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Additional support comes from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.
