13th International Lafayette Pétanque Tournament – Throwing the First Ball – Friday, March 1, 1:30 p.m.-Girard Park pétanque courts (at the end closest to St. Mary Blvd.) Every year at the annual tournament, local officials, dignitaries, and players from area clubs throw out the ceremonial boules to start the tournament weekend. Pétanque is a French game with roots in ancient history. Similar to horseshoes and bocce ball, the game requires precision, finesse and a great deal of concentration that may not be apparent to the casual spectator. This popular lawn game is played throughout the world, both for fun and serious competition.
